TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)- How do you see yourself moving about the city in the future? The Metropolitan Topeka Planning Organization wants to know.

RDg Planning and Design joined MTPO at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library Thursday.

“We’re here today to find out what’s important to the members of the public,” said Thomas Dow with RDg Planning and Design. “So that as we begin the process to shape the transportation plan we make sure we’re meeting the needs of the community as a whole.”

RDg has been hired to create the Futures 2040. The project will take Topeka transportation into the year 2040. It includes more than just roadways, it also involved bikes, pedestrians and public transit.

Under federal law, all federal highway and transportation funds must identified into the future, that’s why the Futures 2040 plan is getting an update now.

“It’s important to consider not only the various modes of transportation,” Dow said. “But also how investment in transportation infrastructure within the community has a significant impact on land use decisions, it has a significant impact on economic development within the region and it also has a profound impact on social equity as well.”

If you were not able to attend Thursday’s meeting, you can give your input by taking an online survey. It can be found at
