Advocacy Alert: Time to Celebrate a Victory and Thank Senator Moran!

July 18, 2017

Yesterday evening, Senator Jerry Moran and Senator Mike Lee (R – Utah) jointly announced their opposition to the Better Care Reconciliation Act (BCRA). That move effectively kills the BCRA since there is no way to get enough votes to pass it or even bring it up for debate.

This is great news for disability rights advocates and demonstrates that Senator Moran has heard us loud and clear and listened to our concerns.

What happens next is uncertain. Following the Moran/Lee announcement Senator McConnell said he would move forward with a bill to immediately repeal Obamacare with a separate replacement bill to follow at a later date. No sooner had McConnell made that announcement when at least three Republican senators went on record opposing that move which probably kills it, too.

Senator Moran had said that he would support McConnell’s idea of repeal now and replace later, but that Congress needs to “start fresh with an open legislative process to develop innovative solutions that provide greater personal choice, protections for pre-existing conditions, increased access and lower overall costs for Kansans.”

Watch for further alerts as this changing situation continues to develop. Meanwhile, advocates should use this opportunity to thank Senator Moran for putting Kansans with disabilities and older Kansans before politics. Tell him we appreciate him clearly saying "No" to the Senate BRCA bill and amongst other things defending Medicaid Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) that allow people with disabilities to live in our own homes and communities.
