You’re Invited to Give Wheelchair Sports a Try!

Kansas Wheelhawks recruiting teens and pre-teens interested in wheelchair basketball

Topeka Parks & Recreation and Kansas Accessible Sports, Inc., July 31, 2008

Date:  August 23, 2008
Place:  Crestview Shelter House, 4801 SW Shunga Drive, Topeka, KS
Time:  10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Over the past year or two, the Kansas Wheelhawks wheelchair basketball team has enjoyed the participation of several teenage and pre-teen players.  We’ve tried to provide opportunities for participation in conference games, but often those games are tough competition with close scores and not everyone has gotten sufficient playing time.  The solution is to develop a “junior” team that can practice with the adult team, but also have game opportunities on its own.  Eventually, that junior team can have its own schedule and practices and coaches.

This picnic is a first-step in promoting the opportunity for youth with mobility impairments in the Topeka and surrounding areas to become wheelchair athletes.  The first common misunderstanding we need to explain is YOU DON’T HAVE TO USE A WHEELCHAIR ALL THE TIME TO PARTICIPATE.  IF YOU HAVE A MOBILITY IMPAIRMENT THAT LIMITS YOU IN STAND-UP SPORTS, THEN WHEELCHAIR SPORTS IS THE ANSWER!

We will bring extra sports chairs so everyone can give this a try.  Don’t worry if you haven’t played before.  We’ll do our best to instruct you and give you the chance to see if this might be something you want to try!

Hamburgers, condiments, beans, potato salad, chips, Gatorade and cutlery items will be provided.  Feel free to bring a side dish! Please call 232-6881 to RSVP by August 16, 2008.
