Nearly 800 fans will be distributed free of charge next week at the Salvation Army, 1320 S.E. 6th.

Topeka-based Westar Energy is providing the 785 fans, which will be given away from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, June 19.

“The Salvation Army is helping us reach some of the most vulnerable members of our communities and help them stay safe during the heat of summer,” said Cynthia McCarvel, corporate community affairs manager for Westar. “Expanding this program allows us to reach more homes and help those in need.”

The fans are intended for older adults and people with disabilities who don’t have a fan or air-conditioning in their home and can’t afford to purchase one.

Fans will be given to anyone who needs one, and there is no eligibility criteria.

The Westar Energy in Motion trailer also will be on hand and will be staffed by customer service specialists who can provide account assistance, energy efficiency tips and bottled water.

Westar’s local gift of fans is part of a $60,000 fan contribution distributed among communities it serves.
